Children’s Injuries

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under get hurt annually playing sports or participating in recreational activities. More than 775,000 of these children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries caused by falls, being struck by an object, collisions, and overexertion during unorganized or informal sports activities.1

Although prompt attention is necessary for injuries that occur in any age group, careful evaluation and follow-up become even more important in children and adolescents to prevent problems with future bone and joint development.

SSPT’s approach to treating child and adolescent injuries

Therapists are important members of a child’s healthcare team. At SSPT, our therapists evaluate a child to determine the most effective way to improve mobility, enhance function, and relieve any pain. During your child’s evaluation, our therapists may:

  • Observe and assess how your child moves and plays
  • Observe your child’s gait (how your child walks)
  • Identify the source of any pain or discomfort
  • Identify potential posture and alignment problems

Your child’s treatment plan might include:

  • Stretching exercises to improve muscle flexibility
  • Balance and coordination activities to decrease the risk of falls and injuries
  • Adaptive activities to help your child participate in school or recreation
  • Modalities to improve circulation and help decrease inflammation and pain
  • Instruction for a home exercise program
